Fundamentals of Filmmaking

This class provides students with a practical and comprehensive grounding in video and film technology. Students learn lighting, camera, composition and audio. Workshops included are taught by working professionals who are masters in their craft. Classes cover lighting for glamour and fashion, natural light for interviews, deep staging and more. Students will shoot Super 8 motion picture film (film is developed and digitized for for students to use in post-production), use steadicam, dollies and jib arms.

Dov Simens has helped Quentin Tarantino, Will Smith, Guy Ritchie and countless others launch their careers in film.

On September 22 and 23, 2018, he’ll be bringing his acclaimed 2-DAY FILM SCHOOL™ program to Seattle Film Institute.  

This two-day program helps aspiring filmmakers learn the skills they need to produce and sell their films.

Fundamentals of Filmmaking is a hands-on introduction to digital film production and the basic tools: camera, composition, scripting, lighting editing, crew roles and how to work as a team. Although the scope is introductory and basic, the approach is professional and the goal is to learn filmmaking the way it is done in the industry.

Advanced Filmmaking for Teens

-Age appropriate groups from 13-18
- Aug 5th to Aug 16, M-F, 9a - 2p

Advanced Filmmaking for Teens is open to those students who have completed the Summer Teen Program (this year or in previous years) or have previous video experience.
Take the skills you've learned and put them to work with either a large collaborative class project, or test out those experimental and innovative ideas you have with the help of a group of dedicated classmates.


The documentary is the original form of filmmaking. It is an informative, evocative art form that is alive and well today, from the feature films of Michael Moore to Youtube shorts.

This class will be focused on developing your documentary project, from finding a topic to polishing the edit to distribution. Some basic technique in audio and camera as it applies to documentary will be covered but for more extensive coverage on those techniques, you should look to our filmmaking classes.
